New York Times v. United States (often referred to as "The Pentagon Papers") is a classic rights of the first amendments case back in the 1970's. In 1970, Richard Nixon (37th United States President 1969-1974) used executive authority on The New York Times to suspend the publishing of classified information to the public. The classified information contained the past activities of the United States in Vietnam and Richard Nixon felt it was a national security threat if the information was made public. The New York Times pleaded the 1st Amendment as a violation of their rights.
